Today, the small town with its white houses is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name, which covers most of the area of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar National Park. Níjar is located around 30 kilometers east of the city of Almería.
Since 2019, the town has been a member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Municipalities in Spain (Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España).
